Signs for development applications
Development application signs go by many names: notice of application sign, rezoning sign, zoning amendment sign, official plan amendment sign, public meeting sign, Committee of Adjustment sign. Each city sets its own size, wording and dates. For the project sign that goes up when you build, see our construction site signs.

- Who installs development notice signs?
- We do. Our own crew installs every sign we print for a development application, in every area we serve. We do not use subcontractors.
- Do I need a permit for a development notice sign?
- For a notice sign, the city sets the spec as part of your application, and your planner can tell you what else is needed. For other large signs: On the sign rules pages we keep (last checked November 3, 2026), most towns let a for sale or lease sign go up without a permit up to a set size, usually 0.5 to 1.2 m² on a residential lot, with some allowing 2 to 4 m² on commercial land. A 4 x 4 board is about 1.5 m² and a 4 x 8 board is about 3 m². This is general information, not legal advice. The city has the final word.
- How long can a development notice sign stay up?
- Until the city's removal date. Where we found it, the date is in that city's section on this page. We take the sign down by then.
- Can you add the public meeting date later?
- Yes. When the city sets the public meeting date, we add the public meeting sticker to the sign.
- Do you get locates?
- Yes. We book a locate through Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) before every dig, so buried lines are marked before a post goes in the ground.
- How long does it take?
- Oversized and commercial installs take up to 3 business days. A permit or a locate can add time, and we tell you before we book.
